Comment: I'm writing to request that all cdc requirements for the upcoming school year (including masks and social distancing) be implemented on k-12 until a vaccine is available to all school aged kids or until county wide herd immunity is over 70%. I'm not sure if you plan to hold a special session but as a parent of an elementary child I wanted to log my request. Thank you

Comment: Dear Members of the Board, I am writing because at the last board meeting during a budget proposal presentation you stated that GPS was actively seeking input from stakeholders on how to spend the $4.4 million of Esser III funds that are mandated to address learning loss. I am a parent stakeholder of 2 GPS high school students. My input is in two areas: 1. I disagree with using the funds for the Second Step curriculum proposed at the board meeting. I looked up the curriculum and saw it is a Social Emotional Learning curriculum that will not achieve the stated mandate of addressing learning loss. In fact, it does quite the opposite to work against making up for learning loss by diverting class time and resources away from academic learning to teach this non-academic curriculum. I am in favor of using the $80,000 instead on extra math lessons and drills across all K-12 classes. That will address learning loss that occurred due to COVID-19 and help our kids from getting further behind in this critical subject. Please leave the social and emotional development of children to their families. They learn all of these skills by interacting with their family members, being involved at church and other extracurricular activities, and by attending school in general. When I send my children to school I expect them to be learning academic subjects during the time they are in class, not things like empathy, role playing of various social situations or discussions of the theory of equity. 2. I am encouraged by the proposal to offer more tutoring outside of the normal times usually offered to meet students’ needs. However, I have some concerns with the planned implementation. I discussed this with my son who will be a junior next year, who has also done various types of tutoring for math over the years. I asked him whether tutoring via text would work for him. We both agreed that this would not be nearly as effective as in person or even a zoom call. Hopefully there is a way to still offer more flexibility and offer tutoring beyond just text in this way as well. Thank you for your time and consideration as you gather input from the community.
