Many people with disabilities fear that if they go to work, they'll lose needed health care and other disability benefits. Disability Benefits 101 helps people with disabilities and service providers understand the connections between work and benefits.

Disability Benefits 101 (DB101) will help you make informed choices and show you how you can make work part of your plan.

DB101 provides:

• Information: Learn about benefits program and rules around work. Get answers to frequently asked questions. Find out how to avoid common pitfalls.
• Calculators: Get results tailored just for you that helps you plan and set goals for work. Get tips for success for your individual situation.
• Experts: Find answers to your questions. Connect to community resources. Get help understanding your next steps. DB101’s Talk to an Expert connects you to a real person who can help with your situation.

Beginning no later than the first IEP to be in effect when the child turns 16, or younger if determined appropriate by the IEP team, the following 8 components must be included in the IEP:

1) Measurable Postsecondary Goals (MPGs) - Measurable goal statements in the areas of education/training, employment, and when appropriate, independent living

2) Updated Annually - MPGs updated annually

3) Based on Age-Appropriate Transition Assessments – Assessments provide information on the student’s strengths, needs, preferences, and interests and are used to write achievable, measurable postsecondary goals

4) Transition Services = Coordinated Set of Activities – Transition-related services or activities that reasonably enable the student to achieve his/her MPGs

5) Transition Services = Course of Study – Courses that focus on improving academic and functional achievement to reasonably enable the student to achieve his/her MPGs

6) Annual Goals – Annual IEP goals that reasonably enable the student to achieve his/her MPGs

7) Student Invitation - Students at least 16 years of age must be invited to the IEP meeting when postsecondary transition services are being discussed

8) Outside Agency Invitation (with prior consent) – A representative of another agency that is likely to provide and/or pay for transition services who has been invited to the meeting after consent from the parent or student who has reached the age of majority

Additional postsecondary transition components include:

Transfer of Rights at Age of Majority - A statement informing the student that his/her rights will transfer to the student at age 18 (must be present in IEPs by age 17)
Summary of Performance (SoP) – A summary of academic achievement and functional performance, including recommendations to assist an exiting student in meeting his/her MPGs for students whose eligibility terminates due to graduation from high school with a regular diploma or due to exceeding the age eligibility for FAPE under State law

For all students with a disability and employment aspirations ages 14-22. 

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) provides a variety of services to individuals with disabilities, with the ultimate goal of students being able to prepare for, enter into, or retain employment. A Voc Rehab referral is appropriate for any student on an IEP, or 504, who has a disability and has job aspirations.

 The following VR Services that may be offered, based upon individual needs:

• Job development
• Job placement services
